Roof Waterproofing or Roof Painting? How to Know What Your Roof Needs
A roof takes the worst of the weather: sun, heavy summer rain, hail and wind. Many owners ask the same question: does my roof need a coat of paint, or does it need waterproofing? The answer depends on the roof type and what is wrong with it.

Roof painting
Painting protects and refreshes a roof that is structurally sound and not leaking. It can restore colour, protect the surface from sun and weathering, and improve the look of the property. Painting suits roofs where the surface has faded or weathered but the roof is not letting water in.
Roof waterproofing
Waterproofing is needed when water is getting in, or when the roof covering, joints or flashings are failing. Warning signs include:
- Water stains on ceilings or walls
- Damp patches after rain
- Cracked or lifting sealant around joints, flashings and penetrations
- Ponding water on flat roofs
- Rust, corrosion or open seams on metal roofs
Liquid rubber waterproofing
Liquid rubber paints are applied as a liquid and cure into a flexible, seamless seal. A fibre-infused liquid rubber reinforces cracks, laps and ridge caps. Depending on the roof, a solvent-based or polyurethane coating may be the better choice.
Preparation decides how long the job lasts
A good result depends on the preparation: cleaning the roof, repairing cracks and damaged areas, treating rust where needed, and using the correct preparation method for the surface. Skipping the preparation is the most common reason roof coatings fail early.
